Mula, a university professor and artist, started photographing as a child, supporting his father in his professional activity as a portraitist for family and public events. The discovery of the artistic dimension of the photography medium, and the acquisition of an academic training opened up to the already trained Mozambican photographer a new dimension of knowledge, and the possibility of expressing himself, using a family heritage of stories and affections.
In Bilhete de Identidade series, Félix Mula addresses issues of ethnic identity through hair as the ultimate expression of identification and personal, natural manifestation. The enchantment that defines them is the unique way how they compose and express their hair, in a revolt formed by infinite braids with a similar past. The visual transgression we contemplate, strong and contained, does not gag, does not scream, but… speaks loudly!
